Welcome to 2012 Pell Grant. The Federal Government Pell Grant program was
at one time known as Basic Educational Opportunity Grants. These
government funded Grants are provided to students on need based depending on
their income for both undergraduate and graduate studies. These 2012 Pell
Grants can be used at a variety of schools and secondary institutions at this
time. The amount of each Pell Grant for 2012 will be dependent upon
requirements relating to the student's family contribution, the cost of school,
the student's enrollment, either full time or part time student and whether the
student will be attending the school for a full year or part of a academic year.
The Federal Pell Grant is a program devised by the United States Education
Department. It intends to provide financial assistance to students who want to
pursue their studies after high school but are unable to do it on their own due
to the lack of funds.
The economic condition is the primary consideration in determining the
eligibility of a student for receiving a 2012 Federal Pell Grant. Other factors
like gender, race, age, disability or merit are not considered for this grant.
The basic requirement for a Pell Grant is a high school diploma and financial
inability of the student, male or female, to continue further studies.
In recent times though, there has been a noticeable change in the stance of the
Federal Government. There have been efforts to increase the facilities provided
to women for higher studies. The present administration is seen to lay more
emphasis on providing educational facilities, especially scholarships and grants
in general with special focus on women and more particularly single moms.
The Federal Pell Grant has some basic eligibility criteria. The chief amongst
these is the annual income of the family of a student. At present a student
whose family earns less than $30,000 a year is eligible for an award under this
scheme. This criterion is applicable to all including single mom students too
but here the individual income is taken into consideration.
The best part about a Federal Pell Grant is that it does not have to be repaid.
A student will receive the aid after the authorities ascertain his/her
eligibility, up to a maximum limit of $5,400. The amount a student will receive
in a year is determined by the Education Department after taking into
consideration the various eligibility criteria especially the financial
condition of the student. There is a formula for calculating this amount which
is based upon the total expenses for the academic year and the expected
financial contribution of the studentís family or in the case of single moms the
The changes in the policies of the Government have resulted in a considerable
surge in the number of students going in for higher studies. This is especially
noticeable amongst single moms as not only have the restrictions on their
admissions to post secondary institutions been relaxed but there are more and
more scholarships and grants easily available to them to pursue their studies.
The Federal Pell Grant 2012 plays a significant part in the efforts of the
government to provide aid to students with low income.
